North Branch School Founder

Charlotte Zinsser Booth was inspired by her mom's memories of learning in school about mythic gods of antiquity --and by education reformers who sought less-bureaucratic "whole child" teaching.  She worked in public schools and then turned her lifetime passion about education toward founding the North Branch School in Afton.  Since North Branch School gets no Federal funding, there is no requirement to "teach to the tests" as sometimes seems to happen when schools are tied to the No Child Left Behind program.

North Branch alumna Audrey Wood penned a Library of Congress "Letters About Literature" award-winning essay.  Ms Wood read from the essay (called "A Letter to J.M. Barrie") on an earlier broadcast of The Spark.
