Spotswood Elementary in Harrisonburg Reopens After Bomb Threat

Harrisonburg police on Monday evacuated students and staff from Spotswood Elementary School due to a bomb threat.  Students were loaded onto buses and taken to Harrisonburg High School, where parents were asked to pick them up from the auditorium.

Early Monday afternoon, police brought in bomb-detecting canines to search.  According to Mary-Hope Vass, the public information officer for the city manager's office, no bomb had been detected.  She said the threat was phoned in to the school, and officials do not know who called it in.  School officials then called the police department, which with fire department officials began evacuating the school around mid-day.  The school was cleared, and students began returning around 2:30.

During the investigation, police cordoned off the area around the school, and closed nearby streets, including Mountain View Dr. from Carlton to Myers Streets, and S. Carlton from Mountain View to Reservoir Dr.
