Natural Gas Pipeline Fight Heats Up in Augusta

Earlier this year Dominion Power Company proposed plans for the construction of a new natural gas pipeline.

The pipeline would run from West Virginia through Virginia and into North Carolina, passing through several counties including Highland, Augusta, and Nelson.  Construction of the pipeline could begin sometime next year, and Dominion has already begun sending letters of intent, or notices, to landowners whose property might be used for the pipeline, letting them know that the company intends to survey their properties.  A 10-year-old Virginia law allows natural gas companies the right to survey private property, as long as owners are notified.  And some of the fiercest opposition to these surveys, and to the proposed pipeline, has been centered in Augusta County, so Bob Leweke took a few minutes to talk about new developments there last week with a reporter who’s been following this story:  Calvin Trice is the Government Reporter for the News Leader in Staunton.
