Editor's note, June 19, 2023 — The woman has been identified as 39-year-old Alexis Lovely. The medical examiner and sheriff's office continue to investigate the death.

A woman who was incarcerated at Middle River Regional Jail in Verona has died, according to law enforcement. WMRA's Randi B. Hagi reports.

The Augusta County Sheriff's Office reported that at about 4 a.m. on Thursday morning, jail officers were notified that a woman was having a medical emergency in one of the female dorms. The officers and medical personnel responded and administered CPR, and emergency medical services arrived just after 4 a.m. and continued to administer aid. The woman was pronounced dead at 4:39 a.m. Her body will be transported to the medical examiner for an autopsy. The sheriff's office is investigating the death but says that no foul play is suspected.

Sheriff Donald Smith said in the press release that the woman's identity is not being released because his office is working to notify the victim's family.

This is the first death reported at the jail since a man died by suicide on December 31, 2021.
