WEMC Holiday Schedule 2014

WEMC Holiday Specials for 2014

Our classical programming will include an increasing amount of holiday music through Advent and Christmas.

Mostly Mennonite, Mostly Acapella will feature seasonal music each Sunday morning and Wednesday evening throughout the month of December.

Friday, Dec. 19th
1pm  A Chanticleer Christmas
Nothing signals the beginning of the holiday season like 12 men singing in beautifully blended harmony. A Chanticleer Christmas is a one-hour celebration of the season as told through the glorious voices of Chanticleer, the San Francisco-based men's choir. The program spans the globe and the centuries - from England in the 1300s to new arrangements of classic and contemporary carols to Chanticleer's popular Gospel medley of Christmas tunes.

Sunday, Dec. 21st
7pm  Air Play – Happy Holidays
WEMC’s own presentation of local classical performances will celebrate with a special mix of holiday music from around the region.

Monday, Dec. 22nd
1pm  Messiah (The Christmas Portion) from Washington National Cathedral  
Celebrate Christmas with the sound of soaring voices. Stile Antico, the award-winning choir from London, pays a visit to St. Paul's Church on Harvard Square for a concert of radiant sacred music for the Christmas season by the most acclaimed composers of the renaissance. Hear the group's luminous blend of voices sing the intricately woven music of Thomas Tallis and William Byrd.

Tuesday, Dec. 23rd
1pm  St. Olaf Christmas Festival  
A service in song and word that has become one of the nation’s most cherished holiday celebrations. Tickets to the event, which takes place at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, are always gone months in advance. The festival includes hymns, carols, choral works, and orchestral selections celebrating the Nativity and featuring more than 500 student musicians who are members of five choirs and the St. Olaf Orchestra.

Wednesday, Dec. 24th (Christmas Eve)
10am  A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols (LIVE)
Hosted by Michael Barone, this is a live, music and spoken-word broadcast from the chapel of King's College in Cambridge, England. The 30-voice King's College Choir performs the legendary Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols service of Biblical readings and music.

12pm  Welcome Christmas!
It's an hour of joyful holiday music featuring one of the world's premiere choral groups, led by Philip Brunelle. This year, a tribute to the late Dave Brubeck with his classical Christmas cantata "La Fiesta de la Posada". Plus, this year's winners of the annual carol contest with the American Composers Forum. Join us for holiday classics new and old.

Thursday, Dec. 25th
1pm  Air Play – Happy Holidays

Thursday, Jan. 1st
11am  New Year's Day from Vienna 2015
Get ready to pop the New Year's Day champagne! The Vienna Philharmonic presents its annual salute to the waltz on New Year's Day 2015. The Philharmonic presents its ever popular annual New Year's Day concert from the Golden Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna. You'll hear your favorite waltzes, polkas and more -- a festive way to start off the New Year.
