DC Legalización Rally and Virginia Organizing

Immigration amnesty rally (public domain image, 2006).

The 2013 Govt. Shutdown at times kept the National Mall's grass closed, but First Amendment activity is being allowed on a case-by-case basis. Some members of Virginia Organizing attended a rally in DC  seeking citizenship for foreign-born undocumented people. The National Park Service supported the October 8th rally and around 30 members of Congress including Nancy Pelosi were expected to attend. Though the Shutdown has led to some oddities like joggers or tourists being fined or arrested while visiting government-owned land (examples: 123), some speech-events including the March for Dignity and Respect for Immigrants were allowed to carry on. Members of Virginia Organizing have been frequent guests on WMRA's call-in issue-talk show, Virginia Insight.

Terry Ward was a WMRA producer and announcer from 1997 to 2016.
